It has been said that stone carving is not for the faint hearted. All I know is that if you were not a patient, deliberate person when you took up the trade, you were when you mastered it, or you got out.

You dominate the stone, but it modifies you.


LIMESTONE CAPITALS


These are part of a series of limestone capitals I recently carved as replacements for deteriorated sections of a building on the campus of Gaulladette University in Washington, D.C. They were executed in the same Indiana limestone as the originals and averaged 110 hours each to complete. A harder stone would have taken even longer. They measure approximately 2.5' x 2.5' x 2'. They all have a "machine finish", which is to say there are distinct and specific chisel marks as a final finish, as opposed to a hand honed finish, shown below.

MARBLE SINK UPRIGHTS

This was done for an all-marble bathroom in an apartment on Central Park West in New York City. It is carved out of Carrara Marble, and has a hand honed finish.
