Sometimes I think the only business that
makes any money is the shipping business. We all need it and use it, but
shippers don't have to worry about building or buying merchandise. They don't
need any. They use yours and mine instead, and simply supply us with a smiling person
driving a vehicle. It's true, the post office does print up some stamps, but UPS
and the others don't even bother to do that much. Since I have always enjoyed the
color and artwork of postage stamps, we ship via the United States Post Office,
(USPS).
It's their Priority Mail level of service that we use for the most part, and
it's really pretty good. 2 to 3 days from coast to coast, and they throw in Alaska
and Hawaii for the same price, (although they do stress the "3" in the 2
to 3 day
promise for the 49th and 50th states). Still, the Priority boxes provided are sturdy and USPS
employees in these parts tend to give them more respect than plain brown boxes.
We like to include a charge for insurance on orders of $400 or more to make certain our accounts have no trouble paying for the order if it
arrives in an unrecognizable condition or not at all, due to rare post office
negligence. COD charges are added if the account requests COD, which, thanks to
the big, big heart of USPS, includes insurance. But, one thing LCB never
does is dream up some kind of "handling" charge. My hands don't get
their own paycheck.
Below are some charts of possible charges, in keeping with the new postal rates
as of 1/4/11, depending on where you live and what your
order requires. All numbers are based upon our ZIP code, which is 05156.
FLAT RATE BOXES ARE ALWAYS $5.20, and we use them as
often as we can! |

If you
wish to order more than 5 pounds of our jewelry, well, bless your soul,
and call for a price. |
What is my zone? I ask myself that all the
time. Last time was yesterday, in fact. Anyway, the post office decides the
zones, and has been accommodating enough to supply me with a chart for all zone
location queries. This chart covers all the ZIP codes. Just pick yours. Look at
the first three digits of your ZIP and find it numerically on the chart. Look at
the zone in which it resides to the right of the ZIP, and apply that zone to the
chart above to determine the Priority Mail charge for your package. It's easier
than it sounds. I mastered it after only a few hundred tries. Honest folks, it's
not hard. Here's the Zone Chart.

For the great majority of our customers, orders weigh
under two pounds, many under even one pound. Therefore, most Priority Mail
charges will be $5.20, (flat rate), in every zone on one pound packages, and
slightly higher for under 2 pound packages, depending on the distance between
you and me, (add insurance or COD). USPS
provides me with the cheapest rates, so they are the default setting for
shipping here. I can ship UPS or
Fedex, but their rates are even higher. Booooo.....
