Mount Holly Elementary School
Seeds to Supper

What is Seeds to Supper?

The Seeds to Supper program at Mount Holly School will provide comprehensive education for students in grades pre K- 6 in the areas of gardening, culinary arts and nutrition. Students will learn all aspects of organic gardening. Children will also be taught how to prepare simple healthy meals and snacks using ingredients grown by the students, as well as, additional fruits and vegetables purchased from local Vermont farmers. Students will receive nutrition education as it pertains to making healthy food choices. An emphasis will be made on nutrition as well as locally produced and seasonal foods.

Why is there a need for the program?

Studies have indicated that multi component programs which include behavioral curriculum in classrooms, parental involvement, school food service changes, and school gardens are effective in increasing fruit and vegetable consumption among youth and reducing obesity and other health related problems.

How is this program funded?

Seeds to Supper is funded entirely through grants. We are the proud recipients of a James T. Bowse Community Health Trust Grant. Additional funding has been secured through an Okemo Community Challenge Grant.

How Can I Get Involved?

The success of this program depends on parent, teacher and community support! An important part of this program is that students will bring home recipes and fresh ingredients so that they can make healthy food dishes with their families. This will be done once a week during their curriculum cycle. We hope that this component will increase parental involvement and provide a catalyst for positively effecting familial eating habits. Please try these recipes at home! We also are looking for volunteers to help with the gardens and Community Green Space.

Units of Study

The Seeds to Supper program has been designed so that each grade will study a particular topic during a specific time of the year. By the time a student completes his or her education at Mount Holly s/he will have cycled through all of the topics.
