News From Ms. Sara
Well, our Starbase adventures have ended! The kids had such a fantastic time and learned a tremendous amount about Science and Math. They also made some great friends from Sherburne School! Thank you to all the parents who were able to help drive us.
Math News - The children have been working VERY hard in math and are almost finished their first chapters. We all are learning how to answer word problems! This takes a lot more work than most people think! Ask your child about writing in math class!
Thanks
Ms. Sara
Remarks from Reading/ Language Arts class
The Blue group is focusing on learning the rules of capitalization and punctuation. Homework for this group has presented the rules to the students in a sequential order and a new rule is posted in the classroom each week. The Blue group is also working diligently to master vowel sounds – both long and short.
Each day, the White group conquers a “Word Ladder” puzzle that is intended to build and expand vocabulary. The White group is currently reading Stone Fox by John Reynolds Gardner. It is the story of a 10 year old boy who bravely tries to save his grandfather’s farm by paying the taxes that are due. His solution: to enter a sled dog race with his beloved canine Searchlight.
The large bulletin board in our classroom bears a new poster that will chart the reading progress of the Red group. The expectation is for 5th and 6th graders to read 2 books per month either in class or for homework. We will read from a variety of genres and texts throughout the year. The Red group is currently reading Dangerous Skies by Suzanne Fisher Staples. It is an intense tale of the unlikely friendship of “Buck” and “Tunes” who find themselves caught up in mystery along the Virginia shoreline where their families have lived for generations.
