Therapeutic riding uses equine assisted activities for the purpose of contributing positively to the emotional, cognitive, physical, and social well being of individuals with disabilities. These equine activities have been shown to be beneficial to the child with physical or developmental challenges while presenting itself in a fun rewarding manner. Studies show that therapeutic riding can increase flexibility, balance, coordination, memory, sequencing, attention, and body awareness. All of this can be accomplished while the child is having fun!
Owners and operators of Dream On Curls Riding Center, LLC are Betsy Lirakis and Zoe Lirakis. Betsy has been breeding American Curly Horses since 1985 with attention put on a well rounded horse with good conformation and personality while maintaining the integrity of a very rare breed.
Riding instructor Zoe Lirakis has been working with physically and developmentally delayed children as well as at risk teens for a many years. Having grown up on the farm, she has been around on these horses for most of her life. Zoe has been riding for 15 years, competing in many different disciplines with the Curly horses. Zoe is certified in CPR, First Aid, CPI which is a de-escalation technique used by many human service or social work professionals, and is familiar with the Challenge by Choice teaching method. She also carries certification in riding instruction for the handicap from NARHA.
The horses chosen for this program are the beautiful, rare breed called the American Curly Horse. These animals possess a number of wonderful traits that make them the perfect therapeutic animal. They are calm, quiet, not easily spooked and possess personality that tolerates all sorts of behaviors from their riders. They are a smaller, stockier animal, running at about 14-15 hands with a nice round barrel that offers a safe secure sitting area for the rider without the worry of being so high off the ground. Curlies also possess a unique trait all to themselves, curly hair. Due to the curly hair, they are hypoallergenic to most individuals. This allows for Dream on Curls Riding Center, LLC to offer more to the clients without the worry of allergies. Dream on Curls Riding Center, LLC is the first and only therapeutic riding center to use this unique breed.
